Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) and Green2x have entered into a partnership with the focus on the design, establishment, and operation of one of the world’s largest biofuel plants to date at CMP’s terminals in the port of Malmö. The establishment contributes greatly to the green energy transition and at the same time creates opportunities for more jobs in Malmö.In Copenhagen, the construction work on the largest shore power facilities for cruise in Europe has commenced. This is the second shore power facility for passenger vessels in Copenhagen after the inauguration in 2021 of the facility supplying power to the ferry connecting Oslo operated by DFDS.
The States of Guernsey and Government of Jersey’s joint procurement process for passenger and freight ferry services is beginning its next phase, and the two Islands are now inviting formal tenders from applicants with the necessary experience and capability.
FerryIn the future, maritime traffic in the Channel will be electric. DFDS is announcing an expected EUR 1 billion investment in six battery electric ships that will be deployed on the Dunkirk-Dover and Calais-Dover routes to carry passengers and freight between the UK and the European Union.

FerryIrish Ferries has entered into a bareboat charter agreement with a purchase obligation for the SPIRIT OF BRITAIN (to be renamed). The vessel is available for immediate delivery and is expected to enter service with Irish Ferries during June.
FerryWärtsilä has designed and delivered controllable pitch propellers for Stena’s new ro-pax vessel, ALA SUINU. ALA SUINU became the first ro-pax vessel to fulfil the DNV Silent(E) notation, satisfying the criteria in the operating conditions at 11 and 18 knots. This environment class notation from DNV was introduced to protect sensitive marine ecosystems, applying to vessels that demonstrate the ability to effectively reduce emissions of underwater radiated noise.

FerryBuilding upon the success of the STENA GERMANICA in 2015, Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Stena Line will work together on a project to retrofit STENA SUPERFAST VII and VIII with methanol propulsion. The ferries operate on the Scotland to Northern Ireland route between Cairnryan and Belfast.
FerryOn 14 May, Tallink Grupp’s vessel SUPERFAST IX (currently named ATLANTIC VISION) was redelivered to the company at the Port of Odense in Denmark. The vessel has been chartered to Marine Atlantic in Canada and operating between Newfoundland and Sydney, Nova Scotia for the last 15 years.
Swedish ferry operator Stena Line announces strategic changes to its management team aimed at further enhancing its position as a market leader and driving continued growth in the region. Paul Grant will assume responsibility for the newly established Irish Sea North region, while Johan Edelman will take up the role of Trade Director for the Irish Sea South region

FerryMaritime software provider NAPA has formally launched NAPA Stability for Ferries, with installations confirmed on seven Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) vessels and ongoing sea trials with Tallink Silja Line. The new onboard stability solution is designed to meet the unique operational needs of the ferry segment, from maintaining safe loading conditions on tight schedules and constant cargo changes to the need for data transparency and ship-to-shore communication. Together, these features will help improve fleet safety and efficiency.

FinanceThe Finnlines Group’s revenue in January–March 2024 amounted to EUR 162.2 (163.1 in 2023) million. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, EBITDA, amounted to EUR 30.1 (45.5) million.
FinanceDFDS’ revenues were up by 11% to DKK 7.0bn, EBIT reduced 45% to DKK 200m. Total freight volumes in April 2024 were 13.9% above 2023 and up 10.1% adjusted for the addition of Strait of Gibraltar routes in 2024 and closure of the Calais-Tilbury route in 2023. The number of passengers in April 2024 were 24.5% above 2023 and down 7.6% adjusted for addition of the Strait of Gibraltar routes.
FerryAt Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A., the construction of a 63.65-metre hybrid passenger-car ferry ordered by Norwegian shipowner Torghatten Nord AS began on 8 May 2024 with the first steel cutting.

Ro-roOn 29 and 30 April 2024, Gasum successfully conducted its first ship-to-ship LNG bunker deliveries in Travemünde, Germany. A total of 700mt was supplied by the LNG Bunker vessel CORALIUS to the sister vessels BALTIC ENABLER and BOTNIA ENABLER, owned by Wallenius Sol AB.
Torghatten has won its first ferry contact in Sweden. Torghatten will operate the Strömstad-Koster connection from December 2025, and two new electric ferries will be built.

Ro-roOn behalf of Stena Line, Stena RoRo has signed a conversion contract with China Merchants Jinling (Weihai) Shipyard for the installation of an additional cargo deck, increased thruster capacity and preparations for shore power onboard STENA FORERUNNER and STENA FORETELLER. The cargo capacity will increase by 30% and the vessels will after conversion be ready to meet future efficiency requirements. The conversion for both vessels will be finalised during 2025.

Finnlines, in partnership with GIT Coatings, is accelerating its decarbonization efforts by adopting XGIT-FUEL, a graphene-based hard foul release hull coating, across its ro-ro and ro-pax fleets. Starting with their first vessel in 2022, Finnlines has already applied this hull coating to four vessels as part of a recently signed fleet agreement, reducing fuel consumption and emissions by around 7% compared to previously used coating.
FerryAfter electrifying the ferries TYCHO BRAHE and AURORA, it is now time for the ferry HAMLET to be converted to full electrical operation, charged with electricity from wind, water and solar energy.
